Frame by Frame: A Handbook for Creative Filmmaking
Published in Paperback by Acrobat Books (February, 1989)
Authors: Eric Sherman, Tom Schnabel, and Joe Spencer
Average review score:

A Course in the Basics of Filmmaking
I have a bit of special insight on this book, as I was fortunate enough to take the author's private filmmaking course, upon which this book is based. Many filmmaking manuals dwell on the technical aspects of filmmaking without covering the key concepts and basics that one needs to truly understand the film medium and how one goes about communicating in it. This book does that. In class, Eric would tell us how Hollywood film professionals -- people who had been involved in the business for years -- would take his course and exclaim that they had come to understood film for the first time! This slim but punchy book covers those basic and includes the exercises from Eric Sherman's course, so that anyone can begin to make films after going through and doing the exercises. I did, and I had never even shot a video before the class! This book is standing the test of time because it contains information that will never become dated. I highly recommend it.

'Frame-by-Frame' is an essential book for any filmmaker
Starting with the history of filmmaking and ending with directing itself, Eric Sherman covers every aspect of making a movie in between. This is the first book I've found that actually tells you step-by-step how to create a film. The information is invaluable for anyone, from the amateur home video maker to the experienced film director. The chapters on Shots and Editing are especially useful. If you want to refine your filmmaking skills or if you only want to gain a better understanding of the movies you watch, this book will help tremendously.

Hollow Folk
Published in Paperback by Virginia Book Co (June, 1973)
Author: Mandel Sherman
Average review score:

The real "Hollow" folk were the Authors
The rating I gave this book is for the purpose of recommending it to others and not for accuracy of content. It is definitely an interesting read and its content will really shock you -- especially if you are a decendant of one of the park's 400+ displaced families, or a frequent visitor to Shenandoah National Park.

In recent years, the Park has acknowledged the "true story" of the mountain families and their hardships surrounding the creation of the park and no longer sells the "Hollow Folk" book. This book is full of misinformation, prejudice against "mountain folk" and damaging (so called) "expert" research and opinions.

Amazon[.com] does not allow reviewers to give a book a rating in the NEGATIVE numbers on historical accuracy, so I am unable to give a number on how the mountain people were depicted in this book. However, as I feel its a must-read for anyone interested in the families of Shenandoah National Park.

Prime Example of biased research to support Gov't. action
Driven by greed, a small handfull of businessmen and executives, boosting the formation of Shenandoah National Park, lied about the quality and nature of the land they proposed to include into the NPS system. Based on those lies, and in the face of much opposition that they managed to stifle, they got a Park approved by congress. Pressed to cover their tracks and eliminate all traces of the inhabitants of the mountains, they were at their wit's end to flush out all forms of civilization to prove their prior claims of primeval forests. Policy-makers, including, C. L. Wirth, professor at the University of Chicago and Miriam Sizer, social worker, met for two days at George Freeman Pollack's Skyland to decide the best course to take. They needed to justify funding to move the inhabitants off of their land, and concluded that a two-month census of such people would be conducted. Data, so-called, was collected from sites that had experienced the worst degradation so as to portray the mountain people as a sorry lot of senseless, immoral, filthy, deviant, poverty-stricken primitives. Arno Camerer instructed that ". . .the hollow folk were not to interfere with full speed ahead for the park; the conference saw them as nuisances and obstacles." [Darwin Lambert, SNP Administrative History, p. 94] The information collected supported the "SNP Evacuation and Subsistence Homesteads Survey," which former realtor, L. Ferdinand Zerkel said, "would justify a thesis or report of large booklet. . .or book length." To anyone who knows the decendants of the families who were portrayed, this book is a prime example of academia at it's worst and the reform movement at its peak; a smear campaign designed with the specific goal of eliminating all traces of the mountain heritage and its worth. Any member of any minority could relate to the tactics and massive contradictions embodied in the Hollow Folk text. Having eliminated nearly every authentic trace of this prescious heritage, the National Park Service, aided by it's own select authors, has been freed to "interpret" its version of the mountain culture, a beast that's "right different" from reality. Hollow Folk can be hailed as a sampling of the power and partnering of special interests, media, government and academia are capable of, absent an educated electorate. The same special interests in the form of foundations, associations and well-healed private partners boost the Park today, and vilify the same people in much the same, but more refined, fashion.

Excellent Book!
This was a book I read years back. Over the years I've thought about this book and how it opened my eyes. I bought extra copies and handed them out to friends. Everyone I gave it too has enjoyed it greatly. It will teach the power within.

Best Book Yet
This is the best self help book ever written. I need to say no more. It has everything one might need to experience happiness within, to make it last a lifetime. It is very old rare book that I found at a garage sale. I have thoroughly enjoyed it and have followed it word for word. Along with my daily devotionals how can I lose. I can't!

Insiders' Guide to the Twin Cities, 3rd
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (October, 2001)
Authors: Holly Day and Sherman Wick
Average review score:

Absolutely the Best Twin Cities Guide
Last summer, I traveled to the Twin Cities to see my Twins play at the Metrodome for the first time (having only caught road games in the past). Taking a three day weekend from work, I wanted to take advatntage of being in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area for more than just a couple of baseball games, and boy did this guide help!

I browsed over a couple of guides in the local bookstore before settling on the Insider's Guide. The information inside was as up to date as could be expected, and using it and a few web sites, I was able to work in two baseball games, the obligatory trip to the Mall of America, a Twins autograph session, trips to the Science Museum of Minnesota (to see the Questionable Medical Devices exhibit), a trip down the part of town featured in the Mary Tyler Moore show, and a quick tour of the Wabasha Street Caves, formerly the hideout of gangsters and the scene of a shootout featured on a History Channel program--all in less than 72 hours!

I even located restaurants near the attractions I wanted to see that served the kinds of food I was interested in--Japanese and Italian at the time--without any difficulty.

Take it from the Insiders when you make your trip to these wonderful cities in the upper Midwest. Minnesota is a hidden treasure that few in the US make it their goal to see--I went for baseball, and came back quite impressed, largely thanks to the Insider's Guide's information.

Insiders' Guide to the Twin Cities
This book is definitely the most comprehensive guidebook to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, containing over 800 listings of local parks, attractions, accommodations and restaurants (both with price scales included). The kids'section is especially great, with much attention focused on how to get the most bang for your buck when taking the family out to play or dine. Also interesting are the interviews with local personalities featured in the book, including a television horror show host, the former mayor of St. Paul, the owner of Minnesota's Baseball Museum, and the director of St. Paul's Como Zoo.

As a longtime resident of the Twin Cities, I appreciate guidebooks such as these that take into consideration things that I personally have considered local "secret" treasures, such as the beautiful Swedish Museum, Minneapolis' Stone Arch Bridge and the adjacent parklands, the fossil beds in St. Paul's Lilydale Park, and just a ton of other things that there just isn't room to mention. The book makes for a fun read, too, with a great chapter on the history of the Twin Cities and information on the geological makeup of the region in general.

Intimacy and Type: A Practical Guide for Improving Relationships for Couples and Counselors
Published in Paperback by Center for Applications of Psychological Type (June, 1997)
Authors: Jane Hardy Jones and Ruth G. Sherman
Average review score:

Intimacy and Type
What I find most fascinating is how we can change during the course of our lives. The section "Personal Growth as Individuation" particulary intrigued me, especially the following: "[Individuation is a developmental process] that requires you to start dealing with your less-preferred functions (or what you might call your less conscious side) by midlife...in order to become more integrated and whole...As you go through life you find it is more functional to be able to use all aspects of the self to maximize your ability to handle a variety of situations and people." As we nudge our less-preferred functions out of the shadows and into the light, we may discover that we have blossomed into fuller selves.

An absolute must have for any and all couples!
My wife and I recently ventured into marriage counseling after a separation. Our counselor gave us this book to borrow after about the fourth session and after we had completed a myers briggs test. It has been by far the best resource we've seen. Lightbulbs are going off with every turn of the page. You have to read this book.

On the Boundaries of Theological Tolerance in Islam: Abu Hamid Al Ghazali's Faysal L Tafriqa
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (December, 2002)
Author: Sherman A. Jackson
Average review score:

THEOLOGY: BETWEEN TOLERANCE AND EXCLUSIVITY
An excelent study of Ghazali's Faysal L Tafriqa. The author Dr Sherman Jackson carefully analyzes the context in which the book was written and shows how it is very relevant to our situations in modern times. He elaborates that "al-Ghazali's mission is to define the boundaries within which competing theologies can coexist in mutual recognition of each other, i.e., as 'orthodox,' in the sense of passing theological muster. Al-GhazAli's aim, in other words, is not to establish who among the theological schools is 'right', but rather to demonstrate the folly and unfairness of the practice of condemning a doctrine as heresy simply because it goes against one's own theology. Furthermore, he insists, even where a doctrine can be justifiably deemed 'wrong' or heretical, this does not necessarily constitute Unbelief." Everyone who is interested in reading a sober account of on-going theolgical disputes among contemporary muslims should pick this up.

Thorough, well-written, and thought-provoking
Beginning with an excellent introduction, this translation of Ghazali's work is a valuable resource for intra-Muslim discourse, as it demonstrates that theological tolerance in determining orthodoxy is needed in order to take into account differing viewpoints within Islam, so long as certain precautionary measures are taken.
The introduction is great since it orients the reader and demonstrates the significance of Ghazali's work.
This book is fantastic and I hope to see more works from this author.
